BIOGRAPHY:
OLUWATOMISIN JASMIN OGUNNUBI is a Nigerian High school student who came into the limelight when in 2016 she developed a location tracking App called ‘My Locator’ at the age of 12. The app has a feature where users in an emergency could reach emergency services with the press of a button. In 2018 she co-authored A Walk In Her Shoes, with her mother, Yewande.
Tomisin’s passion for ICT has seen her take Microsoft exams and certified as a Microsoft Office specialist in PowerPoint, Excel and Word and an Adobe Certified Associate in Adobe Photoshop. She builds 3D animation projects and develops websites.
In 2017, she was awarded a scholarship to attend a summer school program in Computer Studies at the Oxford University, London. She was graded a distinction (A*) in the two principal areas of study – Scientific Programming and Web Design. As a member of her school team that won events at the ‘Roborave Nigeria’ Robotics Competition supported by the US Embassy in Nigeria, she proceeded with the school team to participate at the Roborave International Robotics Competition 2018, in the USA. Tomisin, along with her classmate, represented the school in the Robo-ethics debate on the topic ‘Drones – Harmful or Beneficial’ and won gold for her school in this event. She also attended the ‘Frontiers of Science and Technology’ Session of the Yale Young Global Scholars 2018 summer Program at the prestigious Yale University New Haven campus in the USA.
Tomisin is not just an ICT whiz kid, she is an all-rounder who has distinguished herself in academics, sports and music. She was the best graduating student at the junior secondary school level of the Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls in Lagos with awards in 16 out of 18 subjects. She loves the track and has won medals as a member of the school relay team. She is also a member of the school choir and loves to play the piano.
Tomisin bagged the Nigerian Child Award for Innovation and ICT Personality of the year, 2017 and has been featured in numerous interviews and TV shows including Ebony life TV ‘Moment Z’ and ‘The Crunch’, ‘Wakeup Nigeria’ Breakfast show on TVC, Techpoint Nigeria and a recent documentary on her ICT passion by the BBC.
She is a focused young lady who has set her sights to address issues of youth development, gender and race discrimination, in her generation. Being a proud black Nigerian girl pushing the frontiers of science and technology is one of the ways she is determined to do this.
