Richard, mechanic in Ibadan wakes up one morning with an uncanny feeling that his life is about to change. Later that morning he helps to fix the car of a prominent Ibadan business man. Unknown to him the change in his life has already begun. From the minute he set eyes on the chief’s daughter, Jennifer, Richard is placed on a path that would lead him back to his past. A past that was so unacceptable he had to flee. The past is in Inyi, a small town in Delta State. And that’s where Richard’s story begins; it’s where Richard is known by another name; Ndeoma, a name which holds the secret to his birth. At birth Ndeoma is a prince. But the society he is born into has a system that brands some of its citizen Osu, outcasts and others free borns. It did not matter that Ndeoma’s father is the crown prince, the fact that he is the consequence of a love tangle between his father and another lady from the Osu clan is enough to make Ndeoma an Osu. Ndeoma leaves his village when the truth of his birth comes to light. He finds solace in Ibadan. And Ndeoma becomes Richard. He also becomes successful as a mechanic. When he falls in love with Jennifer he has no way of knowing that Jennifer is not a Yoruba girl, but the granddaughter of the King maker in his own village, who was adopted by her mum’s second husband… Now Richard he must flee again…
BLURB:
dave chukwuji’s CITY OF GOLD AND RUST is a tragic story about Richard and the many twists he experiences in becoming a man, finding love and ultimately losing his life. Richard’s experiences show how greatly the past shapes and haunts the present, and in turn the future. It is a tale of love, its thorns, and roses. Above all the story is wonderfully culture-rich, x-raying the Osu caste system and highlighting its damning effects on people it is expected to serve.
